A Japanese team has created the first ever solar powered spacecraft. It uses a hybrid sail comprised of “large reflective membranes that allow a spacecraft to be pushed by radiation pressure from sunlight.” The regular solar technology combined with this new form of “radiation pressure” could make the use of fuels obsolete, which when flying millions of miles through the space can be quite expensive.

It will be interesting to find out whether solar power provides increasing amounts of energy when the space craft nears Venus its final destination.

What do you think? Can solar power be used more effectively in outerspace, especially when it is closer to the sun?
